Welcoming Y2K with Prayers for World Peace
|
On December 31st 1999 at 11:30 PM about 35 members and
guests gathered in our sanctuary for a very special New Years Eve
celebration. Our theme was Peace. Peace in our lives,
in our homes, in our community, and in our world. We offered
prayers, enjoyed silence, and rang our church bell and personal bells
at midnight. In the opening moments of the year 2000, we ushered out
into the chilly night to plant a "Peace Pole" near the entrance
to the church. Our pole bears the message "May Peace Prevail
On Earth" in English, Spanish, Polish, and American Sign Language.
It also has a small metal plate offering the same message in Braille.
It celebrates our commitment as individuals and as a community
of faith to live in and work for peace.
